RUSSIA. Catherine II, . 10 Rubles, 1762 MM?. Moscow. Young crowned bust r. Rv. Cruciform shields with tiny imperial eagle at center, digits of the date in the angles. Fr.112, Sev.253, Cr.79.2. Close study reveals that this coin was struck over a Peter III 10 Rubles of the same date, although the mintmark of the under type appears to be the C.?.?. of Saint Petersburg. Also traces of Peter’s face can be seen on the obverse, his ski-jump nose is particularly visible just r. of Catherine’s face. Such overstriking was part of the Empress’s plan to expunge her husband from history as far as she was able. The obverse of this broad-flan specimen shows jewelry-type polish, with a natural planchet disturbance in the left field. It remains a major rarity of the Russian series. Very Fine.
