Platinum 12 Rubles, 1837 CΠБ. St. Petersburg. Imperial eagle, three shields on each raised wing, Rv. Value 12 Rubles "in Silver'' in circle, outer legend states the weight in Ural Platinum. Fr.158, Sev.624. The first coinage of Platinum was launched in May 1828 with denominations of 3, 6 and 12 Rubles, with denominations stated "in Silver.'' The 3 Rubles was decidedly popular as the Serinkie, "little gray coin,'' but the novelty quickly wore off and the coins proved useless for foreign trade. Most returned to the imperial treasury and were ultimately redeemed in Silver or Gold coins. This coin's fields are powerfully reflective and show hairlines and a rim nick on either side. Probably one of an original mintage of just 53 struck at St. Petersburg. Here is a highly satisfying specimen of the highest Platinum denomination, in excellent preservation for this relatively soft metal in its largest coinage size. About Uncirculated. (15,000-20,000) Provenance: Ex Louis E. Eliasberg Collection (ANR, April 2005, lot 2041); previously ex Stack's, private treaty, October 1943.Every effort has been made to ensure the integrity of the data but transcription and other errors may have occurred.
