Cruciform crowned shield,_x000D_ with date in angles. Well struck, with a few light marks and_x000D_ considerable remaining mint luster. The largest gold denomination_x000D_ Peter III and a type that appears very infrequently._x000D_ Ex. The Moreira Collection, Lot 1230_x000D_ Empress Elizabeth brought Peter from his birthplace in Germany_x000D_ to Russia and proclaimed him her heir presumptive in 1742. She also_x000D_ arranged for Peter to marry his second cousin, Sophia Augusta_x000D_ Frederica (to be Catherine the Great). The marriage was not happy,_x000D_ and Catherine claimed that Peter had never consummated the_x000D_ marriage. Many think that Catherine, with the aid of an Officer of_x000D_ the Guards Alexi Grigoryevich Orlov, had Peter assassinated.
