RUSSIA. Crimea. Kurus, AH 1191 Year-4 (1781). Shahin Giray (AH 1191-97 (1777-83)). NGC EF-40 PL.KM-72; Bit-5. RARE. Struck under the last independent Khanate of Crimea. Shahin Giray was is in a hard place during the few years in which these coins were struck. After Russia defeated the Ottomans in 1770 (in one of the many wars fought between them), Russia sought an alliance with the Khanate against the Turks. Declining the proposal led inevitably to the invasion of the Crimea by the Russians, and Shahin Giray who had succeeded to the throne in 1776 was forced to take up residence in Saint Petersburg under house arrest. After much persistence, he was allowed to relocate to his childhood home in Edrine, only to be taken prisoner by the Ottomans who viewed him as a challenger to the throne in Constantinople, and executed a year later in Rhodes. Interestingly enough, the geopolitical situation in Crimea today bears a striking resemblance to this same era. A seldom available coin with significant historical as well as numismatic importance. Fully original with charcoal tone accentuating the legends, and smooth fields free of any distracting marks. A coin very few collections house, and one which will instantly enhance the sophistication of the collection it enters. Estimate: $6,000 - $7,500.NGC EF-40.
