Elizabeth gold Novodel Proof Pattern 5 Roubles 1755-CПБ PR64 ?Cameo NGC, St. Petersburg mint, Diakov-N333 (R4), Sev-186(extremely rare), UZD-82N, Petrov-200 Roubles. Obv. Crowned andmantled bust of Elizabeth right, with mintmark below. Rev. Crowneddouble-headed eagle with orb and scepter, and cross of St. Andrew,date above. An astonishing example of this incredibly rare patternissue. Known only as a Novodel, this type is missing from mostmajor collections, and from most museums. The strike is superb,with evidence of being produced from rusted dies, as is often seenwith Novodel issues. The fields are deeply mirrored and the devicesnicely frosted, with only very faint hairlines. One of a series of4 Novodel Proof Pattern 1755 gold 5 Roubles, with eagle reverse.Two pieces were struck with smaller planchet (ca. 23 mm), and twowith larger planchets (ca. 25 mm). This is one of the two largerplanchet patterns. One variety has a large cross on the eagle, andthis type has a small cross. Both are excessively rare, with asmall cross variety, and a large cross variety for each sizeplanchet, and this piece, struck with a Half Imperial die, is theonly example of the small cross type we can reference and the onlypiece certified by both NGC, and PCGS, combined.From the D.
