Mintmaster's initials are those of Alexander Hertov, who served at the St. Petersburg Mint from 1846 to 1857. A superb Proof of the first full year of the new type showing a more refined Tsarist eagle design and a sleeker typeface on the reverse. Bold cameo contrast between frosted, perfectly impressed design motifs and mark-free, fully mirrored fields create this pale yellow gold coin's intense visual appeal; we are left wondering why this coin did not grade Proof-65, as the fields are essentially free of any distracting post-minting marks. No Proofs of this date have been graded by PCGS, while NGC lists only a Proof-61 Cameo and this PROOF-64+ Ultra Cameo, making this coin the finest graded for the year. NGC also lists a Proof-64 in its census, which is the same example as this but now housed in a different NGC holder.
