Russian Empire, time of Nikolai I Pavlovich (1825-1855) AV Ducat. In the types of the Netherlands trade coinage. St. Petersburg (with the marks of Utrecht), dated 1849 (though struck through 1867/8). PARVAE CRESCUNT• CONCORDIA RES, knight standing right, holding sword and bundle of arrows; sword and caduceus (privy mark and mintmark) across upper fields, date across lower fields / MO• AUR• REG• BELGII AD LEGEM IMPERII• inscribed within ornamented cartouche. The most widely used and readily accepted coins in the world during this period, the Netherlands trade coinage was extensively counterfeited by the Russian government for a period of 133 years. In 1849 the Utrecht mint produced 14,344 genuine ducats, then ceasing production due to concern over the growing number of counterfeits and only striking again in 1872. St. Petersburg, having no other choice, continued to strike ducats dated 1849 until they were forced to stop by the Dutch government in 1868, during which time 4.75 million counterfeit ducats were made..
