Ivan III was the heir apparent upon birth, and was proclaimed emperor in 1740. Within a year he was overthrown by Elizabeth and imprisoned thereafter. He was eventually killed by his guards during a melee intended to free him from prison at the age of 23 in 1764. The piece up for bid has been lightly cleaned, and exhibits some degree of porosity on the obverse. Medium to dark tone, evenly disbursed. Choice rims without injury and a cornucopia of detail for the assigned net grade.
